How to Choose a Greenhouse for High Winds

What wind ratings tell you, what they leave out, and what to verify before you buy.

Short answer

If strong wind matters where you live, look for a numeric wind claim tied to the exact greenhouse configuration. Find out whether it describes a gust, 3-second gust, sustained wind, design value, or another basis. Then check foundation, anchoring, reinforcement, connectors, and closure assumptions; consider the actual site rather than ZIP alone; and compare the documentation with local structural and permitting requirements. “Hurricane proof,” “storm proof,” frame thickness, glazing material, and survival stories are not substitutes for exact structural evidence.

What a greenhouse wind rating actually tells you

A wind number is useful only when you know what it describes. Product material may say “up to 76 mph,” “115 MPH wind load, 3-second gusts,” or “135 MPH wind burst load.” Those phrases do not automatically describe the same thing. Keep the original wording, exact model and size, source, date, and conditions together.

Wind can push on one wall, pull on another, and create uplift that tries to move the greenhouse off its base. Doors, vents, and roll-up sides can change the pressure inside the structure. A published product claim is evidence to investigate—not a guarantee that the greenhouse is safe at every site.

Why 100 mph does not always mean the same thing

Ask whether a number refers to sustained wind, a gust, a 3-second gust, a design wind speed, a test result, or another manufacturer basis. The National Weather Service defines sustained wind as a two-minute average, while U.S. building-code wind maps commonly use nominal design 3-second gust speeds at a stated height and exposure. A product’s unspecified “100 mph” should not be silently treated as equivalent to a documented 3-second-gust value.

Royal Victorian VI-36 is a useful example because its current record states 115 MPH wind load, 3-second gusts, under a 2018 IBC structural certification. Canopia Glory is the opposite teaching example: a numeric claim exists, but the reviewed source contains a unit/basis ambiguity. A number can exist and still be unsuitable for normal comparison.

Do not convert unlike rating systems into a universal ranking. If the basis is missing or unresolved, keep that limitation visible.

Why your yard matters

Regional wind context is not the same as exact site exposure. A sheltered residential yard, open field, hilltop, coastal site, or narrow gap between buildings can experience materially different conditions. Trees and fences may reduce exposure in one direction but can also create turbulence or become storm hazards.

Keep this boundary clear

ZIP or regional climate data cannot determine the exact structural wind exposure of a specific yard.

Anchoring and foundation are part of the claim

A wind posture may depend on a concrete or masonry foundation, ground anchors, required connectors, reinforcement packages, base attachment, and exact installation instructions. It may also assume that doors, vents, and roll-up sides are closed or secured. UConn Extension describes wind forces that can lift a greenhouse when openings increase internal pressure and the structure is not anchored well.

A wind rating is only as useful as the installation assumptions behind it.

Do not read “rated to X mph” as “will withstand X mph regardless of installation.”

Buyer checklist: compare the whole claim

  1. Is there a numeric wind claim?
  2. What exact model, size, and configuration does it cover?
  3. Is the basis stated—gust, 3-second gust, sustained wind, or something else?
  4. Are foundation or anchoring requirements part of the claim?
  5. Is reinforcement required?
  6. Must doors, vents, or sides be secured?
  7. Is the source manufacturer/technical evidence or only a seller?
  8. Is the buyer’s site sheltered or exposed?
  9. Does the local authority require something different?
  10. Is any evidence ambiguous or missing?

  • Polycarbonate or another glazing material treated as proof of structural strength.
  • A family-level number applied to a different size or configuration.

  • A snow rating substituted for wind evidence.
  • A seller statement presented as manufacturer certification.

These are evidence gaps, not accusations of wrongdoing. Ask for the exact model, basis, conditions, source, and date—or keep the product in verify-first.

When wind becomes a permitting or code question

Local requirements may depend on the structure’s size and type, permanence, foundation, wind design requirements, utilities, and the locally adopted code. A national article cannot provide a universal minimum wind rating, permit answer, or setback conclusion.

Before ordering, ask the local building authority what applies to the proposed structure and what documentation it wants. If it requires stamped plans, a site-specific design, or a particular foundation, treat that as a project prerequisite.

What wind speed should a greenhouse withstand?

There is no universal residential number. Compare the exact configuration’s documented basis and installation assumptions with the applicable site and local requirement.

Is a 100 mph greenhouse wind rating good?

The number alone is insufficient. Ask whether it is sustained, gust, 3-second gust, design, or test wording, and what foundation and anchoring it assumes.

Can a greenhouse survive hurricane-force winds?

A generic product number cannot support that promise. “Hurricane proof” is not a substitute for exact documentation, correct installation, site review, and local requirements.

Are polycarbonate greenhouses better in high winds?

Is snow rating the same as wind rating?

No. Snow and wind are different loads with different evidence and design assumptions.

How do I know if my greenhouse site is exposed?

Open fields, hilltops, coastal locations, wind channels, and yards without meaningful shelter are practical warning signs. This is a buyer-level screen, not formal engineering exposure classification.

Does ZIP tell me the wind load I need?

No. ZIP or regional climate data can provide context, but it cannot determine the exact structural requirement for a specific yard and greenhouse.
