High tunnel vs greenhouse
They can look similar outside, but they solve different problems and carry different expectations for permanence, control, and production.
Short answer
A high tunnel is usually a plastic-covered, walk-in, passively ventilated structure for season extension and production. A conventional greenhouse is more likely to be a permanent enclosure supporting more controlled growing, with stronger expectations around foundation, glazing, heating, and utilities. Neither is automatically better.
The useful distinction
Oregon State Extension describes high tunnels as walk-in structures with manual ventilation, portable heat if needed, no permanent electricity, and plastic-covered frames. A greenhouse can provide a more controlled environment for starting seeds or year-round growing, but it needs adequate heating, cooling, and light when those are part of the goal.

Why the Finder may route differently
If scale, budget, or building tolerance does not line up with fixed hobby products, a high tunnel can be a more honest route. The tradeoff is less enclosure control, different durability and maintenance, and a different visual and permitting context.
Common mistakes
- Calling every plastic structure a greenhouse.
- Expecting a passive tunnel to behave like a heated winter greenhouse.
- Comparing sticker prices without size, foundation, ventilation, and labor.
- Ignoring cover replacement and weather obligations.
A judgment call
For market vegetables, I would investigate a high tunnel before a small hobby house if the need is rows and throughput. For a permanent garden room, I would not force a high tunnel into that job just because it is cheaper.
