Greenhouse ventilation and overheating
A greenhouse can become too hot long before outdoor air feels dangerous. Ventilation is a first-order design question.
Short answer
Plan how hot air exits, how replacement air enters, and who operates the system when conditions change. Roof vents, side vents, roll-up sides, doors, fans, shade, and automation have different roles. More openings are not a guarantee of safe temperatures.
Why passive ventilation matters
University of Georgia Extension treats heating, cooling, and ventilation as a connected system. Solar gain can raise interior temperatures quickly, and air exchange depends on construction, wind, openings, and maintenance. Ask where vents are, how they operate, and what happens during a power outage.
A practical check
- Identify high and low openings or roll-up sides.
- Check whether vents are manual, thermostatic, or powered.
- Look for shade or crop-management options.
- Confirm openings have a clear path around walls, fences, benches, and plants.
- Plan for unattended hot days.
The Finder’s limit
The Finder can use documented venting as a fit signal, but it does not promise a safe temperature for an individual crop or site. Missing configuration detail remains a seller question.
Common mistakes
- Counting a door as a cooling plan.
- Buying openers without checking vent placement.
- Discharging vents into a wall or hedge.
- Assuming a fan works during a power outage.
A judgment call
In a hot location, I would prioritize a documented airflow path and shade plan before paying for prettier glazing. In a mild climate, simple vents may be enough for the intended season.
